How to Read Music

with Amanda Britt

Want to learn how to read music? Ever wonder what all those lines and symbols really mean, or what it means when someone says F Major? Then this is the class for you! You will start with the basics and progress through the music. By the time you finish this class, you will know how to read music and be able to play the basic notes on the piano.

Strings

with Sarah Garvin

Sarah Gavin is a violinist of 17 years proficient in Classical, Bluegrass, Irish and Scottish Celtic Fiddle performance and training. She studied at West Virginia University as well as the Music Life and Eastern Shore School of Music.  She is not only classically trained, but also trained in a variety of folk music.  She has orchestral and chamber experience with an extensive repertoire in all violin/fiddle genres for solo, orchestra and group. She has competition experience in Celtic and Bluegrass and is an experienced teacher of private and group lessons. Sarah’s bachelors in Japanese language and literature from Ohio State University and study abroad in Tokyo, Japan has provided her experience on Japanese traditional stringed instruments.

Guitar Lessons

with Dr. Kevin McKinney:

Learn to play guitar and to read standard notation at the same time!  Systematic, time-tested approach makes it easy.  No book needed; teacher will provide lesson sheets to download and print. Instructor will be in contact to set up dates and times once you have registered.

with Danny Riddick (Intermediate Level)

You are never too old to learn the ins and outs of playing guitar with long-time musician and guitar player, Danny Riddick. Learn the basics, guitar maintenance, and various music styles. Students must have their own tuneable guitar with a tuner.

Harp Lesson

with Nina Brooks

lever harp, wire-strung harp, and pedal harp - all levels $30 per half hour
Nina Fore Brooks is a professional classical harpist and educator with over 30 years of experience. She studied music at the University of South Carolina; with teachers from NY to Florida, and at Columbia College where she earned her master’s degree in music. A SC certified music instructor, she has taught elementary, college students and adults. She has travelled around the world as a harpist and entertained dignitaries, celebrities, and even royalty. Nina is a member of the American Harp Society, American String Teachers and American PEN Women where she was National League Board member for 6 years, including Music Chairman. She is on the Artist Roster of S.C. Arts Commission as Concert Performer and Classroom Program Guest. She is well-known nationally with harpists.

Piano Lessons

with Cheryl Black (ages 7 & up)

Cheryl Black has many years of teaching experience in Camden as a piano and public school music teacher.She has a BS in applied piano from Winthrop, and a Masters in elementary education from USC.

Jaston is a graduate of USC, a choral director, as well as a piano and voice teacher.

With Helen Walker

Helen Walker has been a music teacher in Kershaw county schools since 2000 on arrival to the USA from England as an international teacher.

Her training is from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music of England and Wales as well as Trinity College of Music, London. She received her masters in divergent learning from Francis Marion University, Florence, SC in 2004 and subsequently gained her masters +30 level in 2012.

Ms. Walker is National Board Certificated in music education. She directs the Doby’s Mill Elementary Choraliers, a performing and competitive chorus of third, fourth and fifth grade students and has taught for the Kershaw County Artistically Gifted and talent program Arts Arising for many years, earning her artistically gifted and talented teacher endorsement on her teaching license in 2018.

Ms. Walker was named Doby’s Mill Teacher of the Year in 2010, Kershaw County District Teacher of the Year in 2011 and top five State SC Honor Roll Teacher Of the Year in 2012. Ms. Walker is an alumni of the 2013 class of the SC Education Policy Fellows and a participant in the STEM to STEAM institute at the Columbia Museum of Art in 2016. Ms. Walker is Orff and GIML certified in music methodologies and is proficient in flute and piano. She is also a 2018 Grammy Awards, Music Educator finalist.

Ms. Walker believes all children are born with an innate musical ability and it is vital to develop and love and appreciation for music in the formative and elementary years.

Brass / Songwriting / Theory

with Dr. Kevin McKinney...

Kevin is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. He offers lessons to all brass instrumentalists, including trumpet, trombone, baritone, and horn and is available for tutoring in all aspects of music theory, including the fundamentals of reading music and in AP music theory.

Voice Lessons

with Amanda Britt (ages 8 to adult)

Amanda Britt is a graduate of Winthrop University. She studied Opera, Musical Theatre and Classical Music. Amanda has been performing in shows at the FAC for two years and teaches several Musical Theatre classes for all ages. She has been the musical director for the FAC’s children’s shows for the last two years. Amanda is also available to teach music theory.

with Jaston Hawes (ages 8 to adult) 

Jaston Hawes graduated from the USC/Columbia earning a Performance Certificate in Voice as well as his B.A. in Music Education (K-12). He earned his Masters in Choral Conducting (under the direction of Dr. Larry Wyatt and Dr. Alicia Walker) and served as the assistant Director of the Dutch Fork Choral society). Jaston has acted as the music director for musicals at the FAC for the last two years and teaches General Music Education for Kershaw County Public Schools.
